SPINNING A NINJA TUNEby YURI WUENSCH
THE SUN Sat, 21st May, 2005
Extract from special feature on MTV Urban Beats, a program featuring the P.01 'Heart Ov Glass' music video.
...Exhausted as I was, I was kept
awake and captivated by Urban Beats,
program about electronic music and
dance culture on MTV Asia.
If Urban Beats is any indication,
the Southeast Asian dance scene isn't
just vibrant, it's pretty darned smart,
too.
The half-hour show had range, cycling
through videos by the Herbaliser,
Asian Dub Foundation from their new
album, Tank, Product.01 with a breaks
rework of Blondie's classic Heart of
Glass and Beck's new twangy bit of
funk, Black Tambourine.
The show also featured footage from
the Thirst DJ competition in Vietnam,
a label profile on Ninja Tune, charts
and event listings for Bangkok, Kuala
Lumpur and Singapore. All told,
Urban Beats is one sharp-looking
product. Where has this show been
all my life?
It's an obviously forward-thinking scene
out here, or at least an attempt by MTV
Asia's program directors to lead by
example.
To MTV's Urban Beats' credit, it's a
show giving deserved attention to some
truly great music - if only someone
savvy enough at Much could pick up
on it.
